ProtoStar and Indian Space Research Organization Announce Joint Satellite Capacity Agreement
New Asian DTH Satellite Operator to Provide Capacity for Indian Customers
Bangalore, India, & San Francisco, CA, November 19, 2007 -- ProtoStar Ltd., a Bermuda corporation, and Antrix, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), announced an agreement to jointly provide 216 MHz of interim satellite capacity to support the rapidly expanding direct-to-home (DTH) television demand in India.
The interim capacity will provide ISRO/Antrix with the necessary transponder space it requires to bridge the impending shortage until new Insat capacity becomes available. For ProtoStar, the agreement allows it to utilize capacity its has leased from another provider until its planned launch of ProtoStar I in second quarter 2008 and ProtoStar II in first quarter 2009.
“ProtoStar welcomes its new partnership with ISRO/Antrix as an opportunity to begin serving the high growth Indian DTH market at a critical point in its services expansion,”
said Philip Father, President and CEO of ProtoStar during a recent visit to India. “We anticipate that this interim agreement will be the beginning of a long and mutually productive relationship with ISRO and Antrix.”
K.R. Sridhara Murthy, Executive Director of Antrix, said that the demand for transponders in India has shown an increasing trend upwards.
“Towards this, ISRO has been providing additional capacity both through Insat satellites and through other satellites,” said Murthy. “The recent launches of Insat-4B and Insat-4CR have enabled ISRO to add 36 transponders within a space of six months. In order to further fill the gap in the demand, ISRO has also been adding transponders to the Insat system by leasing capacity from other regional partners from time to time”.
The service is scheduled to begin in February 2008.
